Childhood overweight and obesity have increased alarmingly in recent decades all over the world, particularly middle-income countries like Brazil, Mexico China. In response to epidemic, several states governments introduced restrictions on sales of high-calorie low-nutrient-dense foods beverages schools. However, most school canteens around world continue offer such unhealthy products. The lack clear evidence about impacts junk food/beverage availability childhood potentially contributes delaying application regulatory policies. fact, food represent an important source revenues for schools, especially contexts budgetary pressure. Based a representative sample Brazilian middle students, this article takes advantage local initiatives that began 2001 aimed at banning Among other effects, instrumental variables estimates show in-school soft drink increases male BMI risk.
